June 2020: Still here in partial lockdown

Coronavirus Update/Actualización

The numbers of Covid/19 cases continues to climb in Mexico. However, the need to jump start the economy is very real too, so with social distancing in place, some parts of Mexico are beginning to reopen.  It is expected that the virus will hit its peak in July.  Churches are not yet meeting together face to face, but the use of Facebook Live has increased dramatically.

Los números de casos de Covid-19 continúa a subir en Mexico.  Pero a la vez, la necesidad para abrir la economía es real también, entonces con la sana distancia, algunas partes de Mexico estancia empezando a abrir. Se supone que llegaremos al pico del virus en julio.  Las iglesias no están reuniendo presenciales, pero muchas están usando Facebook Live.

Chiapas, the state where we live, has had 3468 cases and 234 deaths.  In Berriozabal, the small town we live near, there have been 36 cases documented. 

En Chiapas, el Estado donde vivimos, hemos tenido 3468 casos y 234 muertos. En Berriozabal, la comunidad cerca de nosotros, hay 36 casos documentados.  

Ministry Continues...El Ministerio Continúa...

The churches here continue to serve their local communities through giving food baskets, cleaning supplies, and in general helping their neighbors.  With more than half of the population working “unofficial” types of jobs, such as a taco stand or another business out of their homes, continuing to work is essential for many.  Many have lost their jobs as businesses have closed or cut back on their employee hours.

Las iglesias de México todavía están sirviendo sus comunidades dando comida, suministros, etc. para los vecinos.  Con la mitad de la población trabajando en labor "no oficial" es necesario continuar trabajando.  Muchas han perdido sus trabajos mientras los negocios han cerrado o tuvieron que reducir las horas de sus empleados.

David has preached by Zoom a few times, once to the pastors in Costa Rica Central district, once for the Oaxaca district and once for the Genesis missionaries.  We are hoping to one day soon begin to travel again, at least to the districts nearest us, but it is unlikely to happen before August. 

David ha predicado por Zoom algunas veces, una vez para los pastores de Costa Rica Central, también para el distrito de Oaxaca, Mexico y para los misioneros de Genesis.  Esperamos a viajar otra vez, a menos que a los distritos más cercanos, pero no es probable hasta agosto.

Partnership Ministry is entering a new phase of learning to connect even when travel is impossible. The Tree City Church in Idaho and the South Pacific district are continuing their relationship, but for now by Zoom. 

El ministerio de Socios ya está empezando una fase nueva, conectando por video mientras no es posible viajar.  La Iglesia de Tree city en Idaho y el distrito Sur Pacifico continúan su partnership por Zoom.

 

Family News...Noticias de la familia

Kayley has begun her master’s program in OT at the University of Texas El Paso, and in the first week of classes, she made the move to the state of Texas. We are thankful for a safe place for her to land, staying on the church property of Nazarene Border Initiative in her own little apartment, next door to our friends, the Tarrants and with the Rodriguez´ family nearby. God is good!  We are thankful for the scholarship that Kayley has received for the summer courses, but still praying about the next academic year, so your prayers are appreciated for that so that in-state residence can be obtained.

Kayley ya ha empezado su carrera en Terapia Ocupacional con la Universidad de Texas, El Paso.  En su primera semana de clases, ella se mudó al estado de Texas.  Estamos agradecidos con Dios por un lugar seguro para ella en un departamento cerca de amigos en la propiedad de la Iniciativa Frontera de la Iglesia del Nazareno.  Los Tarrants (foto abajo) y los Rodriguez son missionaries que viven cerca de ella.  ¡Dios es bueno!  Estamos contentos que Kayley recibió una beca para el verano y estamos orando que la beca continúa para el año escolar.  Apreciamos sus oraciones para eso para que el costo de los cursos sea como residente.

Joshua continues to work in Columbus, and we are thankful he was able to take some days off of work to drive with Kayley to El Paso.  It was a 24 hour drive and they arrived at about 2am on a Friday night. Joshua flew home to Ohio on Sunday and then right back to work from his home office in the basement.

Joshua està trabajando en Columbus, Ohio y estamos muy agradecios que él pudo tomar 2 días de vacación para manejar con Kayley a El Paso.  Fue un viaje de 24 horas y llegaron a las 2am el viernes por la noche.  Joshua voló a Ohio el domingo y regresó a su trabajo de casa el lunes desde su sótano. 

Daily Life...La Vida Diaria

We are thankful to live on a property that allows us to get outside, enjoy the weather when it is not too hot, to exercise, and to care for the property.  Shelley has been doing some painting projects and David has kept the weeds from growing too high. Queta, the property dog, keeps us entertained as well.  

¡Qué bueno es vivir en una propiedad que nos deja salir afuera para disfrutar el clima (cuando no hace tanto calor), hacer ejercicio y cuidar la propiedad.  Shelley hace proyectos de pintura y David trabaja en cortar el césped.  Queta, la perra de la propiedad, nos acompaña también.

The rains have begun...it´s green!  ¡Es verde! Las lluvias ya empezaron.

We have enjoyed having fresh lemons and soon avocados and bananas on the property. 

Nos gusta tener frutas como limones, y pronto aguacates y bananos en la propiedad.

Occasionally we need to purchase something in Tuxtla, the city of 800,000 nearby.  We found that Dairy Queen has remained open, so we splurged on an ice cream treat.  Yummy!

De vez en cuando, viajamos a Tuztla para mandados, a la ciudad de 800,000.  Encontramos que Dairy Queen está abierta, entonces tuvimos que comer un helado.  ¡Delicioso!

Nuku season has come and gone, thankfully.  Nuku are flying ant-like bugs that come out of the ground after the first big rain of the year and collect under every light they can find.  Chiapanecos (people from Chiapas) absolutely love to eat them.  They fry them up with salt and lemon and there you go, a crunchy treat.  

La temporada de Nuku ya pasó.  Nuku son como hormigas que vuelan que siempre vienen de la tierra después de la primeras lluvias.  Los Chiapanecos les gustan comerlos fritos con sal y limón.  ¡Un snack crujiente!

Friends in Ministry...Amigos en ministerio

Since we cannot travel or spend time with friends these days, we are thankful for Mario and Jessi who live nearby and have become our only social outlet during these months. We spend one day a week together which has added greatly to our sanity.

Pues no hemos viajado para ver amigos en estos días, estamos agradecidos por Mario y Jessi que viven cerca y hemos sido nuestros únicos contactos personales (cara a cara) en estos meses.  Normalmente pasamos un día de la semana juntos que nos ha dado salud emocional durante la cuarentena.

April and May 2020

Well, here we are in Berrizabal, Mexico, doing about the same thing we were doing one month ago, just like most of you, staying at home, working from home, connecting with people by phone and video, trying to give encouragement and stay encouraged ourselves. We are well, we are healthy, we have all we need, so all is good.

Bueno, aquí estamos en Berriozábal, México, haciendo igual como el mes pesado, como la mayoría de ustedes, quedándose en casa, trabajando de la casa, conectando con la gente por celular y video, tratando a dar animo a otros a nosotros mismos también. Estamos bien de salud, no nos falta nada, todo está bien.

Covid-10 Update: 

The number of cases in Mexico grows each day, and we have yet to reach the peak here in Mexico. People are trying to stay at home, but many depend on their livelihood to eat each day, so that makes it a very difficult decision. We are required to use a mask in most stores and generally only one person per family is allowed inside the store. Some are practicing social distancing, some are not. 

El número de casos en México crece cada día y todavía no hemos llegado hasta el pico todavía.  Los mexicanos están tratando de quedar en casa, pero muchos necesitan trabajar para comer, y por eso no es fácil. Usamos cubre bocas cuando entremos los mercados y normalmente solamente una persona de la familia pueda entrar a la vez.  Algunas personas quedan la distancia social requerido, pero otros no.

Based on current projections, the peak of Covid-19 cases in Mexico will occur in mid-May or a bit later. But who knows? Unlike the USA, no one here is talking about opening up the economy anytime soon. 

Basado en las proyecciones, el pico de Covid-19 en México pasará en los mediados de mayo o poquito después.  ¿Quién sabe?  Aunque en los Estados están hablando de abrir la economía nuevamente, aquí no hay discusión de esto todavía.

We have loved seeing how the local churches are serving in their communities.  Here are a few photos of ministry happening in the Oaxaca district.

Family News/Noticias de la familia Webb:  

Kayley graduated from MVNU on May 2^nd and celebrated her 22^nd birthday on May 3^rd.  We celebrated with her the best we could by video and messages, but it was disheartening to not be able to attend a graduation ceremony and see Joshua too in Ohio this weekend.  Maybe sometime in August or later in the fall?

Kayley se graduó de MVNU el 2 de mayo y celebró su cumpleaños #22 el 3 de mayo.  Celebramos con ella lo mejor posible usando Zoom y mensajes, pero fue un poquito triste no asistir su ceremonia de graduación ni ver a Joshua en Ohio, como fue el plan para este fin de semana.  ¿Quizás en el mes de agosto o después?

Kayley will begin classes soon at UTEP (Univ of Texas El Paso) in the master’s program for OT (Occupational Therapy).  At least we hope so, as classes begin on June 8^th.  There are still some details to work out, but we are hopeful that the finances, scholarships and loans will all come through in time for her start online classes.  For now, Kayley is staying in Ohio since we do not know when campus classes will start or when the number of cases of Covid-19 will decrease in El Paso.  So, like most of us these days, there is not much that we know for sure currently.  Time will tell!

Kayley comenzará cursos pronto en UTEP (Universidad de Texas en El Paso) para el programa de maestría para Terapia Ocupacional (OT).  Las clases empiecen el 8 de junio.  Todavía hay detalles para terminar, como finanzas, becas, etc y esperamos que todo vaya bien para empezar cursos online pronto.  Por ahora, Kayley quedará en Ohio pues no sabemos cuando los cursos en El Paso van a empezar ni cuando los números de casos de Covid-19 bajan allí en El Paso.  Como muchos de nosotros en estos días, no hay muchas respuestas para el futuro.

Joshua is working from home, and seems to enjoy it.  He is staying at home, but with a house full of roommates, he doesn’t get too bored.

Joshua está trabajando de casa y le gusta trabajar así.  Aunque él está en casa, sin salir, pues él tiene otros amigos que viven en la casa, nunca está demasiado aburrido él.

March 2020: Fast Changes as Coronavirus comes closer

Hello Friends!  ¡Hola Amigos!

We were blessed at the end of February to have David’s sister Tina visit from Florida.  We had no idea what was coming in the weeks ahead and how travel would be restricted, so now we are even more thankful that she could visit when she did. It was also David’s birthday (March 3) so we enjoyed celebrating him too!

Somos bendecidos que en el fin de febrero la hermana de David (Tina) nos visitó de Florida. No tuvimos idea de lo que pasaría en las próximas semanas, incluyendo cómo los viajes serían cancelados, y por eso estamos aun más agradecidos que ella nos visitó.  También, fue el cumpleaños de David (3 de marzo) y disfrutamos celebrando a él. 

During that time, Kayley was on a missions trip to Guyana. She had a great time learning a new culture, meeting new friends and serving in construction and ministry. It was quite an adventure.  They flew into Guyana, took a long hour bus ride to the east side of the country and from there took a 4-5 hour boat ride to where they spent the week.  Thanks to everyone who supported her on this trip. These experiences are life-giving and life-changing. 

Durante la visita de Tina, Kayley tuvo un viaje de misiones a Guyana. Ella tuvo un tiempo maravilloso de aprendizaje de cultura, conociendo nuevos amigos y sirviendo en la construcción y ministerios.  Fue todo una aventura. El equipo llegó a Guyana, tomó un viaje largo por bus y después 4-5 horas en lancha para llegar al sitio. Gracias a todos que apoyaron a ella en su viaje. Estas experiencias dan vida y cambian la vida.  

The month of March started off really well with a Work and Witness team from Mesa, Arizona (West Valley Church) working with the Bajo Su Gloria Church on the USA/Mexico border at San Luis Rio Colorado.  The team arrived on March 11^th and worked hard all week to demolish an old section of the church building so that a new building can be constructed there soon. 

El mes de marzo comenzó bien con la llegada del grupo de TyT de Mesa, Arizona (West Valley Church) trabajando con la iglesia Bajo Su Gloria en San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, México.  El grupo llegó el 11 de marzo y trabajaron toda la semana para demoler un edificio para que un nuevo pueda ser construido.

We have enjoyed working with Lazarian World Homes, an organization that helps build around the world using Styrofoam or Polyurethane blocks. This project is another opportunity to partner in ministry. The Church in Mesa, Arizona has contributed $15,000 to the project and now they have worked on the demolition. Lazarian will now take over the construction and add the necessary funds to complete the building.  Wow!  What a great way to work together.

Hemos disfrutado mucho trabajar con Lazarian World Homes, una organización que ayuda a construir de bloques de poliestireno. Este proyecto es otra oportunidad  para trabajar con socios.  La iglesia de Arizona han dado $15,000 USD para la construcción y ha trabajado en la demolición. Ahora, Lazarian va a ayudar con la construcción y los fondos para terminar el proyecto. ¡Guau!  Qué bendición trabajar juntos así.  

The Mesa W&W team also helped to repair the sanctuary roof which had lots of leaks.  Thankfully it does not rain too much in San Luis Rio Colorado, but when it does, it is a serious problem!  Lots of drop ceiling was taken out and a new protective waterproof covering was put on the roof. 

El equipo de Arizona también trabajó en el techo del templo que tenía muchas fugas. Gracias a Dios no llueve mucho allí, pero cuando llueve, hay problemas serios.  El cielo raso fue quitado y un nuevo cubierto fue puesto en el techo.

The team from Mesa got home safely with lots of toilet paper purchased in Mexico for their family and friends (apparently, they were out of TP in Arizona stores!).  It was a great week!

El equipo de Mesa llegó sano y slavo con un montón de papel higiénico para sus amigos (aparentemente, no había en Arizona!).  ¡Fue una semana excelente!

We arrived home to Berriozabal on Sunday at midnight knowing that we had probably worked with our last team for awhile.  In the USA, the Coronavirus was spreading and each day it was clearer that travel was not going to be possible. So the team scheduled to arrive on March 19^th has postponed. 

Llegamos a casa en Berriozabal el domingo medianoche sabiendo que probablemente habíamos trabajado con el grupo final por un buen rato.  En los Estados Unidos, Covid 19 se esparció y cada día fue más claro que los viajes vayan a ser cancelados. Espero que el grupo de marzo pueda llegar en el otoño.

Thankfully, since the Coronavirus had not yet been too much of an issue in South Mexico, the local churches in Juchitan were able to work for a few days on the district project.  We were sad to not be there, but kinda glad too because it was 97 degrees, working in the direct sun mixing concrete.  Too bad we missed that! (sarcasm included). We have been and continue to be too old and wimpy for all that! 

Gracias a Dios, hasta ahora el virus no ha sido un gran problema aquí en el sur de Mexico, y el distrito en Juchitan tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en el proyecto.  Quisiéramos estar allí, pero a la vez estuvimos contentos porque la temperatura fue más de 35 Celsius.  ¡Somos viejos y débiles para trabajar tanto!

Just yesterday, Mexico entered into Phase 2 of the Coronavirus. The majority of the all cases (400 or so) have been in Mexico City area, Jalisco, and near Cancun with a couple of northern states also seeing various cases. 

Justo ayer, México empezó con fase 2 de Covid 19.  La mayoría de los casos están en la Ciudad de Mexico, Jalisco y Cancún y algunos en el norte del país.  

The Church of the Nazarene throughout the country has cancelled all meetings, so our work is mostly by video and phone. We are feeling safe here in Chiapas (most southern state) but are taking plenty of precautions at the same time. We are not going out much these days, generally just for groceries and needed supplies.  Some day soon, I suppose the government will direct everyone to stay home, but we are not quite there as of yet. 

La Iglesia del Nazareno en todo de México ha cancelado todas las reuniones y por eso nuestro trabajo es por teléfono y video.  Estamos bien aquí en Chiapas (sur del país) pero tomamos precauciones a la vez.  No salimos mucho, solamente para comprar comida y suministros.  Algún día pronto, supongo que el gobierno vaya a ordenar que todos quedan en casa, pero todavía no ha llegada a este punto.

Joshua is working from home in Columbus, Ohio and Kayley is on MVNU campus finishing up the semester online.  There are about 25-30 students left on campus, so it is very quiet.  It’s been sad for her to so abruptly say goodbye to most of her friends, knowing that a graduation ceremony will not happen as planned, but she understands it is for the best. 

Josue está trabajando de casa en Columbus, Ohio y Kayley está en el campus de MVNU terminando el semestre en linea.  Hay 25-30 estudiantes en campus y es muy quieto.  Ha sido triste para Kayley decir adiós tan rápido a sus amigos y sabiendo que la ceremonia no pasará en mayo, pero ella entiende las razones.

We have teams scheduled for June and July, and time will tell if travel will be possible then.  God is in control and we have no fear.  

Hay equipos para junio y julio y tenemos que esperar para ver si sería posible viajar entonces.  Dios está en control y no tenemos temor.  

On Sunday we were able to watch church services online in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and two in the USA.  It’s always better to worship in person with the congregation, but we enjoyed hearing all four services’ music and sharing of the Word. From the reports I am hearing, God is using these online services to reach many people.  Some of the churches are reporting a 200 percent increase in attendance, based on the online count.  Amazing!

Vimos el domingo varios cultos en linea en Costa Rica, República Dominicana, y dos más en los Estados Unidos.  Siempre es mejor congregarnos cara a cara, pero disfrutamos los 4 cultos.  De los reportes que he oido, las iglesias tuvieron un incremento en sus cultos, algunos dicen por 200%.  ¡Increible!

We pray you are safe and well during these changing days. Our Lord, our Father and the Spirit are not taken by surprise. God is God of the impossible!  He is with us in the good days and the bad days.  We are thankful for His continual presence. 

Esperamos y oramos que ustedes estén bien durante estos días de muchos cambios.  Nuestro Dios, nuestro Padre y el Espíritu saben todo.  Dios es Dios de lo imposible.  El está con nosotros en las buenas y las malas.  Somos agradecidos por su presencia eterna.

As a reminder of God's goodness, the lemon tree planted by the Sickels a couple years ago is now bearing fruit.  We are blessed!

Two Big Events

The month of February has been a whirlwind of activity.  We have enjoyed every moment!

El mes de febrero ha sido un tornado de actividad.  ¡Hemos disfrutado cada momento!

First, we hosted the Work and Witness team from the West Texas district. They served with us on the South Border district in Tapachula, Chiapas.  The team of 14 people did construction work at the district center, served immigrants at two medical clinics, took part in two zone church services and enjoyed a day relaxing in the nearby mountains. Attending a Haitian church service on Sunday morning in Mexico was a highlight for all.  

Primeramente, trabajamos con el equipo de TyT de West Texas. Ellos sirvieron en el distrito de Sur Fronterizo en Tapachula, Chiapas.  Los 14 del grupo trabajaron en la construcción en el centro distrital, sirvieron a los imigrantes en dos brigadas médicas, participaron en dos cultos y disfrutaron un día en la montañas cerca de la ciudad.  Asistiendo el culto el domingo de los Haitianos fue muy especial para todos.

Steve Pettit, former missionary to El Salvador, Haiti and the Dominican, led the team.  It was a joy to work with him and the representatives from five churches from West Texas. The team included a couple in their 80s down to a 12 year old young man. The missionary leaders all agreed that it was a wonderful team.  We never heard one complaint, even though life in Southern Mexico is quite different than what they were used to. This team was up to the challenge and came to serve.

Steve Pettit, ex-misionero a El Salvador, Haiti y Dominica, guió el equipo.  Fue un gozo para trabajar con él y los representantes de cinco iglesias de West Texas. El grupo incluyó una pareja con 80+ años y un joven de 12 años.  Los lideres están de acuerdo que este grupo fue maravilloso.  Nunca escuchamos una queja, aunque la vida en el sur de Mexico es diferente queTexas.  El equipo fue listo para el reto de servir a su projimo.

A new volunteer helped us with this team. His name is Eliú and he was a great help. We look forward to serving with him in the future.

Un nuevo voluntario nos ayudó con este equipo.  Su nombre es Eliú y él fue un excelente ayudante.  Esperamos trabajar con él con otros grupos en el futuro.

A few days after the West Texas team left Mexico, event #2 was held. Mario and Jessi, sponsored missionaries serving with W&W Mexico, were married on February 15^th.  The wedding was held on the grounds where we live in Berriozabal.  Although the weather was a little chilly, the wedding went off without a hitch and everyone had a great time.  

Algunos días despues de la salida del grupo de Texas, el evento #2 pasó.  Mario y Jessi, misionerios serviendo con TyT México, se casaron el 15 de febrero.  La boda estuvo en las instalaciones en Berriozábal, donde vivimos.  Aunque el clima fue un poquito frio, la boda fue un exito y todos tuvieron un tiempo muy especial.

It was super special to have Kayley with us for the weekend.  She is busy with her senior year at MVNU, but managed to get away to be in the wedding.  

Fue una bendición tener a Kayley con nosotros para el fin de semana.  Ella está bien ocupada con su año final de la universidad, pero ella tuvo tiempo para ser parte de la boda de Jessi y Mario.

Everyone enjoyed have Stephen and Anne Sickel back again with us all in Mexico. They were a great help with the preparations for the wedding.  

Todos disfrutaron mucho ver a Stephen y Anne Sickle otra vez en México.  Ellos ayudaron mucho con todas las preparaciones de la boda.

As we look ahead to March, we predict a busy month with three W&W teams, one to Mezcala, one to San Luis Rio Colorado and the other to Juchitan, Oaxaca.  We will be working with two of the three teams.  We are thankful for volunteers who will assist during this busy month!

Para el mes de marzo, predicimos que vayamos a estar ocupados con tres equipos de TyT, uno a Mezcala, uno a San Luis Rio Colorado, y el otro a Juchitán, Oaxaca. Vamos a estar con dos de los tres equipos.  Estamos agradecidos por los voluntarios que asistirán durante este mes.
