September Update

Hello Friends/ Hola amigos,

We have been traveling to visit churches in Kansas, Ohio and Illinois as part of a short home assignment before we make the move to Chiapas, Mexico.  We have enjoyed seeing lots of friends along the way, as well as our kids who are in Ohio. 

Hemos estado viajando para visitar varias iglesias en Kansas, Ohio and Illinois durante la gira misionera antes de mudarnos a Chiapas, Mexico.  Hemos disfrutado viendo muchos amigos en el camino, includo nuestros hijos en Ohio.

Many of you know our kids, so here is a quick update on them/ Muchas de ustedes conocen nuestros hijos y por eso aquí hay un resumen de sus vidas.

Kayley – 20 years old now and a junior at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio.  She is a nursing major and although her courses are difficult, she loves what she is studying, especially the clinical experiences she gets each week.

Kayley tiene 20 años y estudia en su tercer año en Mount Vernon Nazarene University en Ohio.  Ella estudia enfermeria y aunque sus cursos son dificiles, ella disfruta todo lo que está estudiando, especialmente las experiences en el hospital cada semana.

She had a great summer, spending two months in Mexico.  She has taught us some of the words that we will need to use in Chiapas (chido instead of chiva!).  Just before classes began, she experienced skydiving!  She is an adventure seeker and loved it!  Now she wants to bungee jump!

Ella tenía un verano muy bueno, pasando dos meses en México.  Ella nos ha enseñado algunas palabras nuevas que vamos a usar en Chiapas (chido en lugar de chiva!). Antes de empezar sus classes, ella tenia la advenvtura de "skydiving." Ella le gusta la aventura y disfrutó mucho la experiencia!  Ahora ella quiere hacer "bungee jump!" 

Joshua – 24 years old, graduated from MVNU two years ago and is working in a bilingual position at a company near Columbus that helps small businesses develop their marketing online.  He enjoys this new position that he has been in since March.  He is dating Lilly who lives in West Virginia (a beautiful person inside and out).  Joshua is going to fly to McAllen, TX in early October to drive with us the 20+ hour trip to Chiapas.  We are thankful for his help and his adventurous spirit!

Joshua tiene 24 años, se graduó de MVNU hace dos años y está trabajando en un puesto bilingue en en negocio cerca de Columbus, Ohio que ayuda a los micro empresas a desarroloar su promoción en linea. El le gusta su nuevo trabajo despues de empezar en marzo.  Tiene novia, Lilly, quien vive en West Virginia (una bonita persona, adentro y afuera). Joshua va a volar a McAllen, Texas en octubre para ayudarnos a manejar los 20+ horas a Chipas.  !Estamos agradecidos por su ayuda y su espiritu de aventura! 

 A huge blessing of this transition time has been to see some of our family, including our kids.  Here are few photos of some special times with David's family./ Una bendicion durante este tiempo de transicion ha sido la oportunidad de ver la familia, incluyendo nuestros hijos.  Aquí hay algunos fotos de la familia de David.

Baby Owen loves Uncle David.  We enjoyed time with David's sister Tina and her son and family.

David's Mom moved into an apartment in Des Moines and for the first time in 3 years all the Webb kids were together.

 

If you missed the last blog from August, check it out.  Lots of prayer requests listed there.  We are thankful for how God is answering those needs./ Si no has leido el blog del mes pesado, debe revisarlo.  Hay muchas peticiones para oración allí. Estamos agadecidos por como Dios está respondiendo a los necesidades.

• Successful interview at the Mexican consulate in Chicago.  All paperwork is not complete.  We hope to pick up our visas to enter Mexico in two weeks, just in time. 
• We sold our vehicle in Curacao.  This was a huge answer to prayer.
•  We are in Costa Rica to prepare to move our household good to Mexico.  Lots of work to be done, but we know God will be with us in the process.
•  Portland Work and Witness Conference – Sept 15-16^th.  We look forward to talking to people about Partnership opportunities!
•  David will travel to Colombia at the end of the month.  Pray for safe travel and productive, inspired meetings.
•   We will leave for Mexico the first week of October, hoping to arrive to our new home by Friday night October 5^th. 

• - La entrevisa en el consulado de Mexico en Chicago fue un exito.  Todos los papeles están listos.  Esperamos recibir los visas para México en dos semanas, justo a tiempo!
•  Hemos vendido el carro en Curacao.  Gloria a Dios!
•  Estamos en Costa Rica para la mudanza.  Hay mucho que hacer, pero sabemos que Dios está con nosotros.
•  Conferencia de TyT en Portland - 15 y 16 de setiembre.  Estamos emocionados hablar con muchas personas sobre Partnership.
•    David va a Columbia en el fin del mes.  Oramos por un buen viaje con reuniones productivos y inspirados.
•  Viajamos a México la primera semana de octubre, esperando a llegar el viernes 5 de octubre.

Finally…An Update / Finalmente…Un Nuevo Blog

Hello to all our dear friends and family,

It has been a number of months since we have updated the blog, and we are finally at a place where we can share the news.  We have a new missionary assignment to México!  But first, a little background.

There are three words that best characterize this year for us:  transition, healing and waiting.

Transition:  First, with a transition to Curacao in January, then to the USA for medical reasons, and then the understanding that God was leading in a new direction, but where??? Now the transition continues as we move to the Mexican state of Chiapas in October.

Healing:  We are so thankful to report that all health issues have been resolved with the help of good medical care in the USA. Also, we are thankful for Global Mission and the Church of the Nazarene who assisted us in many ways during this difficult time. God is so good to provide what we need when we need it.

Waiting:  This part is never easy, but God has been faithful in it all. We have referred to this time as the roller coaster ride, and we are excited to know the ups and downs are coming to an end (at least for now) as God has provided a new direction for us as missionaries. 

We are excited about the new opportunity to work with our Mexican brothers and sisters. We will be working in two areas: Partnerships with Mexico and with the development of Work and Witness within and beyond the country of Mexico: Mexico Serving the World. The assignment begins on September 1^st.

One way that God has been faithful is to have sent Kayley to Chiapas this summer to assist Stephen and Anne Sickel who also live there and are Coordinators of Work and Witness for Mexico. Kayley worked with teams and helped with the Sickel’s three kiddos. This experience was wonderful for Kayley, and she is excited for us to live and work in Mexico. This is a real praise as she is Tica through and through, but God was preparing her before we even knew where we would end up.

Joshua is also excited about Mexico and has asked if he could drive with us from the border to Tuxtla area (20+ hour drive). We are looking forward to the drive with Joshua along to help. 

For the month of August, we are traveling and speaking in churches in Kansas, Ohio and Illinois. 

September will be a busy month with a number of trips planned: Costa Rica for packing and moving, to Portland for a Work and Witness conference, to the Midwest to prepare for packing the car and driving to southern Mexico, and then David will have a ministry trip to the country of Colombia (more details soon!). 

We ask for your prayers. The list is long, but here are a few prayer needs:

•  Safe travels:  lots of trips planned in the next couple months
•  Deputation services:  that we will speak clearly and boldly 
•  Sale of vehicle:  quickly and easily
•  Packing and moving: provision of the moving company at a good cost
•  Residency:  paperwork is needed to begin the process in Mexico
•  Health: continued healing and strength for each day
•  Family: Kayley’s junior year at MVNU in the nursing program and Joshua’s work in Ohio.

We are blessed to know you and to partner with you! As David likes to say, “The best is yet to come with Jesus.”

Hola a todos nuestros amigos y familia,

Ha sido algunos meses desde hemos actualizado la información en el blog y finalmente estamos listos para compartir las noticias.  ¡Tenemos una nueva asignación a servir en México!  Primeramente, compartiremos un poquito de lo que ha pasado.

Hay tres palabras que caracterizan este año para nosotros:  transición, curación y esperar.

Transición:  Primero, la transición a Curazao en enero, después la transición a los Estados por razones medicas y entonces el entendimiento de que Dios estuvo guiándonos a algo nuevo, pero dónde??? Ahora la transición continua con la mudanza al estado de México de Chiapas en el mes de octubre.

Curación:  Somos muy agradecidos de reportar que todos asuntos de la salud han sido resuelto con la ayuda de buenos médicos en los Estados.  También, damos gracias por Misión Global y la Iglesia del Nazareno que nos han ayudado en muchas maneras durante este tiempo difícil.  Dios es tan bueno y provee todo lo que necesitamos cuando lo necesitamos.

Esperando:  Nunca es fácil esperar, pero Dios ha sido fiel en todo. Hemos dicho que este tiempo ha sido como un ride en una montaña rusa (roller coaster), y estamos contentos saber que los subes y bajas van a terminar (a menos por un rato) porque Dios nos ha dado una nueva asignación como misioneros. 

Estamos emocionados trabajar con nuestros hermanos y hermanas Mexicanos.  Vamos a trabajar en dos áreas:  Partnerships con México y desarrollo de Trabajo y Testimonio: México Sirviendo al Mundo. La asignación comienza el 1 de setiembre.

Una manera que Dios ha sido fiel es en enviar a Kayley a Chiapas por el verano para asistir a Stephen y Anne Sickel que sirven allí y son los Coordinadores de TyT para México.  Kayley trabajó con equipos de TyT y ayudó con los tres niños de los Sickel. La experiencia fue maravilloso para Kayley y ella está emocionada que sus padres van a trabajar y vivir en México.  Es un milagro porque ella es Tica de corazón, pero Dios estaba preparando todo antes de que nosotros sabíamos los planes del futuro.

Joshua está emocionado sobre la mudanza a México también y ha pedido si pueda ayudarnos a manejar de la frontera hasta Tuxtla (20 o más horas de manejar).  Sería una bendición tener la ayuda de Joshua en México.

Por el mes de agosto, estamos viajando y hablando en iglesias en Kansas, Ohio y Illinois.

Setiembre será un mes ocupado con muchos viajes:  a Costa Rica para empacar y mudarnos, a Portland para la conferencia de TyT, al centro de los Estados para empacar el carro y preparar para el viaje a México y finalmente David tendrá un viaje al Colombia (más detalles pronto!).

Pedimos sus oraciones.  La lista es larga, pero aquí hay algunos de las necesidades:

• Viajes seguros
• Cultos de deputación (la gira en los Estados)
•  La venta de un carro
•  Empacando y mudando de Costa Rica
•   Residencia en México
•  Salud y fuerzas
•   La familia:  Por Kayley y su tercer año en la universidad en el programa de enfermería y por Joshua y su trabajo en Ohio.

Estamos tan bendecidos tener ustedes en nuestras vidas.  Como David le gusta decir:  “Lo mejor está por venir con Jesús.”

Hello! 

It has been a few weeks since we have updated you, so it is time to share what has been happening. In the month of March, we left Curacao for the USA for health reasons. Shelley has had some issues arise that require specialized care. We are so thankful that these are not life-threatening issues, and she is recovering well. We are also thankful for Global Mission, the Mesoamerica Region, and Church of the Nazarene who have been so responsive and helpful, allowing the time necessary to heal. 

We are also thankful for all of you who have been praying for us in these weeks. We ask for your continued prayers, and in a few weeks, we will update you again on our progress.

Han sido algunas semanas desde les hemos dado información y por eso queremos compartir lo que está pasando.  En el mes de marzo, salimos de Curazao para los Estados por razones de salud.  Shelley tenía problemas de salud que requieren ayuda especializada.  Estamos agradecidos que los problemas no son tan serios y ella se está recuperando bien.  También estamos muy agradecidos por Misión Global, la Región Mesoamérica y la Iglesia del Nazareno porque todos han sido de mucha ayuda, dando el tiempo necesario para sanar.

Finalmente, estamos agradecidos por todos ustedes que han sido orando por nosotros en estas semanas. Pedimos sus oraciones y en algunas semanas vamos a dar más información sobre nuestro progreso.

CURACAO: Arrival and Adjustments / CURAZAO: Llegado y Ajustes

HELLO Dear Friends / HOLA Queridos Amigos:

Day 1 in Curacao / Día 1 en Curazao

David likes to share this joke: Do you know why coins are made of metal? Because change is hard!  YEP!  We can attest to the truth of that joke.

A David le gusta compartir este chiste: ¿Sabe por qué las monedas se hacen de metal?  ¡Porque el cambio es duro!  Sip!  Estamos de acuerdo con la verdad de ese chiste.

We arrived to Hato International Airport on Jan. 20^th.  Unfortunately, our bags did not arrive with us, but decided to spend the night in Panama.  We rented the smallest car ever (Kia Picanto), arrived to our new lodging and spent the first few hours adjusting to our furnished apartment. Our bags arrived about 5pm on Sunday. We were glad for clean clothes.

Llegamos al aeropuerto Hato Internacional el 20 de noviembre.  Desafortunadamente, nuestras maletas no llegaron con nosotros y pasaron la noche en Panamá.  Rentamos un carro muy pequeño (Kia Picanto), llegamos a nuestro lugar y pasamos algunas horas ajustando a nuestro apartamento amueblado. Las maletas llegaron a las 5pm el domingo.  Estuvimos contentos tener ropa limpia.

We have been here two Sundays now and have attended two churches, one Dutch with English translation and one Spanish. We are learning that the protestant churches here tend to be either Pentecostal or very traditional, so we hope to offer a new option for those who do not have a church home.

Hemos estado acá por dos domingos ahora y hemos asistido dos iglesias, uno en el idioma de holandés con traducción a inglés y el otro en español.  Estamos aprendiendo que las iglesias protestantes en Curazao son uno de dos extremos: Pentecostal o muy tradicional.  Por eso, esperamos ofrecer una nueva opción para los que no tienen una iglesia.

Most people here speak at least three languages of these four: Papiamentu, Dutch, English and Spanish. The most commonly heard language we hear in stores, on the street and just in general is Papiamentu. Thankfully our English and Spanish help us to be understood.

La mayoría de la gente aquí hablan a menos de tres de los cuatro idiomas: Papiamentu, holandés, inglés y español.  El idioma más oído en las tiendas, en la calle y en general es Papiamentu.  Somos agradecidos que nuestro inglés y español funcionan más o menos bien.

Our goal the first week was to learn our way around the city and purchase a vehicle.  God provided a great vehicle for us.  It is a Toyota RAV4.  David had seen this vehicle in an ad online and called the owner, but no answer.  We assumed it had sold and moved on.  On the last day of car shopping, after we had decided to purchase a smaller car for lack of finding anything else, David decided to visit one more lot very near our apartment.  They had one RAV4 and it was the exact same vehicle David had seen online.  Within a couple hours we had both taken a test drive and decided it was the car for us.  God is good!

Nuestra meta la primera semana fue conocer más de la ciudad y comprar un carro.  Dios nos proveyó un vehículo perfecto para nosotros.  Es un Toyota RAV4.  David había visto este carro en un anuncio online y llamó al dueño, pero nadie le contestó.  Nosotros asumimos que había vendido el carro.  En nuestro día final de buscar autos, después de decidir comprar otro carro porque no pudimos encontrar nada más ni mejor, David decidió visitar un lugar más que quedó muy cerca de nuestro apartamento.  Ellos tuvieron un RAV4 y fue el mismo vehículo que David había visto online.  En un par de horas habíamos manejado el carro y decidimos es el carro para nosotros.  ¡Dios es bueno!

Here is an update on a few others ways we have spent our first few days in Willemstad.

Aquí está una lista de las cosas que hemos hecho en estos primeros días en Willemstad.

1.     We met with Jonathan Petrus, who is leading a small cell group, concerning future plans and ideas.  He has been such a great help to us.

2.     We joined the Thursday night prayer meeting and asked God for his guidance and leading in all things.

3.     Jonathan set up a meeting with the Protestant School association about partnering together to serve the Lord.  They were very open and a second meeting is scheduled for next week.

4.     We attended a worship conference over the weekend and got to meet some other leaders and pastors in Curacao.

5.     We visited the Amigunan di Cristo (Friends of Christ) Children’s Center.  It was a blessing to meet Emma and other leaders. We hope to partner with this wonderful ministry as well.

6.     We purchased a textbook to begin to learn Papiamentu.  We can read many of the street signs already since it is similar in some ways to Spanish, but we need to study so we can hear the language better. 

7.     We are re-reading the book Organic Church and it has been a great help and encouragement to us as we make this huge transition to a new culture.

Cell Group/Celula

Chilren's Center/Centro para niños

1.     Reunimos con Jonathan Petrus, quien está liderando un grupo célula, sobre planes e ideas para el futuro.  Él había sido una ayuda grande para nosotros. 

2.     Reunimos con el grupo de oración el jueves en la noche y pedimos la ayuda y guía de Dios en todo.

3.     Jonathan había hecho una cita con la Asociación de Escuelas Protestantes sobre trabajar juntos para servir a Dios.  Ellos son abiertos a trabajar juntos y otra reunión está citado para la próxima semana.

4.     Asistimos una conferencia de adoración en el fin de semana para conocer más líderes y pastores de Curazao. 

5.     Visitamos el centro para niños, Amigunan di Cristo (Amigos de Cristo).  Fue una bendición conocer a Emma y otros líderes.  Esperamos conectarnos con este ministerio.

6.     Compramos un libro para aprender Papiamentu.  Podemos leer algunos rótulos ya pues el idioma es similar a español, pero necesitamos estudiar para oír mejor el idioma.

7.     Estamos leyendo el libro Organic Church (Iglesia Orgánica) y ha sido una ayuda y nos da animo mientras hacemos esta transición a una nueva cultura.

Since our apartment is close to the beach (5-minute drive), we have walked on the beach two times to enjoy the views. 

Pues nuestro apartamento queda cerca de la playa (5 minutos manejando), hemos caminado allí dos veces para disfrutar la vista.  

The temperatures have been mild with highs of about 82F (28C) degrees each day. There is always a strong wind here and our apartment has great wind flow, so we have not yet had to turn on the air conditioner.  We are thankful that we can get used to the heat little by little. Everyone says that September will be the worst month for heat. We hope to be adjusted to the heat by then.

Las temperaturas no han sido tan altas con la temperatura máxima en 28 cada día.  Siempre hay una brisa muy fuerte acá y nuestro apartamento tiene mucha brisa, por eso no hemos tenido que usar el aire condicionado.  Somos agradecidos que podemos acostumbrarnos a la temperatura poco a poco.  Todos dicen que el mes de setiembre será lo peor. Esperamos acostumbrarnos al clima antes de setiembre.

We have many prayer requests, but we will just list a few here.

1.     Residency – Pray we will be approved without any issues in God’s perfect timing.

2.     Housing – Pray we will find the house or apartment where God would have us live long term.

3.     Open Doors for ministry – Pray we will be discerning about where God is leading us to minister, whether a particular area of the city or a certain population group.

4.     Unity in ministry – Pray that the existing cell group will share in the vision for the evangelistic and compassionate ministry plans.

5.     Transition – Pray we will have a sense of peace. We miss so very much all our many friends in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama and there have been moments of grieving, but we try to focus on where God is leading and move forward step by step. 

Tenemos muchas peticiones, pero vamos a listar solamente algunos aquí.

1.     Residencia:  Ora para que recibamos la residencia sin problemas y en el tiempo perfecto de Dios.

2.     Hospedaje:  Ora para que encontremos la casa o apartamento que Dios tiene para nosotros para los dos años.

3.     Puertas abiertas para el ministerio:  Ora para que seamos sabios sobre donde Dios quiere guiarnos a ministrar, si es un área de la ciudad o un grupo de la población.

4.     Unidad en el ministerio:  Ora para que la célula comparta la visión para la evangelización y los planes de Dios para compasión.

5.     Transición:  Ora para que sintamos la paz de Dios.  Extrañamos mucho nuestros amigos en Costa Rica, Nicaragua y Panamá y hay momentos de llanto, pero tratamos de enfocarnos en donde Dios quiere llevarnos y movernos adelante, paso a paso.

Thanks for keeping us in your prayers.  As the Poas’ Church of the Nazarene motto says:  Prayer changes things and people!  We are awaiting the transformation that God has planned through the Church of the Nazarene in Curacao and beyond.

Gracias por recordarnos en sus oraciones. Como dice el lema de la Iglesia del Nazareno de Poás:  ¡La oración cambia las cosas y las personas! Estamos esperando ver la transformación que Dios tiene planeado para la gente de la Iglesia del Nazareno en Curazao y más allá.

January 2018 - Christmas and Family

As we continue to prepare for the move to Curacao, we enjoyed our final Christmas and New Years in Costa Rica.  It was a great family blessing for us to be together as a family for one week. Joshua brought along his girlfriend Lilly and Kayley joined them on the trip down.  These times are very limited for us, so we are thankful when they occur.

We enjoyed a couple nights at the beach, a visit to La Finca church, the Star Wars movie on the day of release, and lots of good food.  It was sad to say goodbye to Joshua and Lilly after one week, but we were glad to keep Kayley around for one month.  She was out and about more than at home, but that is because she has soooo many friends in Costa Rica.  It is home for her.

  

 

Now it is January, and the kids have returned to the USA and are busy working and studying in Ohio.  For us, life is filled with goodbyes and many hugs. We have had many special times with friends, as you can see in the photos below.

We know the Costa Rica leaders will be praying for us in Curacao.

Moving takes lots of organization and work, and since we are leaving in just over one week, we are getting close to being ready.  The actual move of our household goods will not happen now, but we are preparing everything so it can be done quickly once we have residency in Curacao.  That process could take anywhere from two weeks to four months.  So things are a bit up in the air about when we will return one last time, but God knows the plan, and we trust it will all go well. 

We are very excited about this New Year for the Costa Rican churches.  The DCPI church planter training was held recently and the Central district has great plans for this year.  With the Encuentro event planned for July, we know that great things are ahead for the districts.  We wish we could stay to see it all happen, but we will be watching from afar.

We are excited to know that there is already a meeting set up upon our arrival with the Protestant Education Association to see how the Church of the Nazarene can be a help to the schools. This will be a great way to start!

Prayer requests for our upcoming move:
1.  First week in Curacao – begin to adjust to new accommodations and the heat, meet with the school leadership, and purchase a vehicle.

2.  During first few weeks:  Learn more about the culture and needs in Curacao.  Find a long-term rental home. Attend the DCPI training in Cuba. Begin ministry with Spanish speakers.  Support the Dutch ministry.

3. Ongoing request – Our residency will be in process beginning about January 17^th.  We pray the process will be easy and will be completed at just the right time (whenever that is!).
