It’s been an amazing year serving as a missionary with the USA Canada Region helping young adults to serve as mission interns and discover God’s call on their lives.

My time has been spent in development of resources to make The Cause Missions Interns program a reality: manuals, promotional material, logistics, financial plans, giving links, trainings, emails and more emails. And of course, speaking engagements at district assemblies and local church Faith Promise events to share what’s happening on the Region.

One of my main responsibilities is to choose great host sites for developmental opportunities for interns for 8 weeks up to 11 months. You can see the approved sites here, but more are coming.

These churches or Nazarene Compassionate Ministry Centers have vibrant ministries to their multicultural community: serving needs in housing insecurity, food insecurity, community outreach events, sewing ministries, garden ministries, teaching, workshops, etc, etc. etc. 

In May, after 7 weeks of training, a group of 9 young adults aged 18-28 traveled to three sites to serve for the summer.  El Paso, TX, Clearwater, FL and Indianapolis, IN.  These students had an amazing time serving, learning, growing, and adapting to a new place, new culture(s) and new ministries. They were well-received, mentored and cared for by the host sites. It was a huge success! One intern is still on site until the end of November and more are going out in February!

Seeing these young ladies in action in Clearwater, Florida was a highlight of my summer. Two are from Michigan, two from Ontario, Canada, one from Connecticut and one from Memphis.  They made a great team.

Developing a new missions workshop called Explore has also been on my plate. This training is for those who are interested in missions in the Church of the Nazarene and want to learn some basics. This training will be available online but also face to face at the district level by trained facilitators. Learning about God's mission and how to participate in it is an important first step. Watch for this training coming soon! 

The Cause missions interns is a year-round program around the world. For the USA Canada Region it will be most active in the summer when students have the time and opportunity to serve. Who knows how many will be sent Summer 2027?  Maybe 20, maybe 30, maybe more???  

On a personal note, our grown kids are going well. Joshua lives in Corvallis, Oregon and works with Oregon State University Alumni Association. His girlfriend Jenna is studying for her PhD in Geography.  

 

We are pleased to announce that Kayley and Matthew are now married! We had a wonderful time in New York on the Keuka Lake for the wedding. Matthew and Kayley live in Austin,TX. Kayley works as an Occupational Therapist for a school district and Matthew is a computer programmer.

David walked Kayley down the aisle and then turned around and officiated the service!

Hello One and All,

A few highlights since starting my new missionary assignment with the USA/Canada Region and The Cause in January 2026:

1.     So much to learn, feeling overwhelmed

2.     Great to spend time with old and new friends from around the world in Kansas City in February. It was cold!

 

3.     Transitioning out of some church responsibilities to have time to serve

4.     Interviews with intern candidates for The Cause

5.     Helping to build curriculum for the Pre-deployment training for interns

6.     Planning the new Explore events (cross-cultural and missions information step 1)

7.     Zoom calls, zoom calls and more zoom calls

8.     Talking with current and future missions sites

9.     Building a handbook for sites

10.  Continuing with my other part time gigs: Lazarian World Homes and the School of Ministry for the South Texas District.  

Been just a little busy, but it’s all wonderful things to be a part of.

Time has flown by since our last post more than two years ago. Here is an update of some of what has happened in that time.

1.     Ministry at Mid-Valley Naz in Weslaco, TX: God allowed for the construction of the new building which was badly needed, and we celebrated the one-year anniversary in August. God provided the funding to complete the building without debt. That is amazing and unheard of, but our God does great and wonderful things!

The church continues to grow steadily. We have served here for 4.5 years. We started with 19 people and now there are between 50-65 each week. On Thanksgiving we had 82 in attendance! We don´t know how, but the turkey planned for 65 fed us all.

 

2.    Family: Joshua lives in Columbus, Ohio and works with a digital marketing company that specializes in helping custom home builders. His girlfriend is Jenna, and we finally got to meet her at Thanksgiving, and yes, we approve!  

     Kayley lives in Austin, TX and currently works with a school district as an Occupational Therapist. She enjoys her work, especially with the special needs kids at the high school. Her fiancé is Matt and he is a good match for Kayley. Again, we approve!

3.    The Latest: Shelley will start working once again with Global Mission as a sponsored missionary. She will be working with a new initiative called The Cause which gives opportunities for young adults to serve in a missionary setting in the USA and Canada for 2 weeks up to 2 years. 

Helping students find their call in life has been an ongoing ministry for both of us, so we look forward to what the future holds. David will continue pastoring the Mid-Valley Naz Church but will be involved from time to time as needed. Shelley will step back from some of her local church responsibilities but will continue with leading music at the church.
